Your Indiana Brain Injury Lawyer

John P. Young is very interested in brain injury and has represented Hoosiers as their Indianapolis and Indiana brain injury lawyer for more than 22 years. Mr. Young is a past Chair of the Board of Directors of the Brian Injury Association of Indiana. His interest in brain injury began when a family member was involved in a motorcycle accident. The family member was not wearing a helmet, his passenger was. He has been dealing with brain injury since. The passenger walked away with road rash. Brain injury can occur at any moment, in auto accidents, semi tractor-trailer accidents, large truck accidents, and drunk driving accidents. A brain injury can even occur in a fall from your bicycle.
Mr. Young also represents Hoosiers in claims for social security disability benefits. In his work before the administration Mr. Young met an Administrative law judge who was vibrant and intelligent. It occurred to Mr. Young that he had not seen the law judge for a couple weeks. When Mr. Young asked after the Judge, Mr. Young was informed that the judge was riding his bike along a path in Indianapolis when a dog ran out in front of him causing him to lose control. The judge was not wearing a helmet. The judge sustained a brain injury. For the next year, the judge was in rehabilitation for his brain injury. His doctors were pretty sure that if the judge would have been wearing a helmet, he would have avoided the brain injury. This brings us to the point. The best cure for brain injury is prevention. If you do not have a brain injury, you do not have to worry about a cure. One sure way to prevent most brain injuries is to wear a helmet. Start your kids off young, a good habit is as hard to break as a bad habit. Some statistics about helmets and brain injury are:
- More than 300,000 children are treated in emergency rooms for bike related injuries each year.
- 70% (yes - 7 out of every 10 children) in the emergency room were treated for brain injury that was likely preventable if a helmet were used.
- Bike Helmets are nearly 90 % effective in preventing brain injury according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
- If the children were all wearing helmets while riding their bikes, 39,000 to 45,000 brain injuries would be prevented each year.
